Bins and recycling

If you are struggling to put your bins out for collection Leeds City Council can provide support. This service helps  frail, elderly, disabled or incapacitated persons where there are no able bodied residents to present the wheeled bin to the kerbside.

What to put in your bins

Yes please

Your black bin is for general household waste only.

Try to recycle as much as you can in your green recycling bin

Your household waste should be placed inside the bin with the lid closed. We do not collect extra bags on top of or near your bin.

No thanks

We will not collect your bin if you put items in that are hazardous, too large or heavy.

Bag collection service

If we collect bags from you, please remember that 3 is the maximum number of bags on a collection.

Yes please

  • aluminium 
  • aerosols
  • bubble wrap
  • cardboard
  • carrier bags
  • cartons and Tetra Paks
  • foil including food containers and takeaway trays
  • glass bottles and jars
  • metal cans
  • paper
  • plastic bottles, tubs and pots
  • plastic types 1 (PET), 2 (HDPE), 4 (LDPE) and 5 (PP)
  • stretchy plastic bags and wrapping

Make sure that your recycling is clean and dry before you put it into your green bin.

Extra recycling

We will collect any extra recycling if you leave it in a clear or green plastic bag at the side of your bin on collection day.

You may also want to think about requesting an extra green bin.

Yes please

  • flowers and plants
  • grass cuttings
  • hedge clippings
  • leaves
  • twigs and small branches (no more than 3cm thick)
  • windfall fruit

Please put these into your bin loose and do not use any plastic bags.
No thanks

  • branches over 3cm thick
  • food waste, including fruit and vegetable peelings
  • Giant Hogweed
  • Himalyan Balsam
  • Japanese knotweed
  • pet bedding, pet waste or cat litter
  • plastic of any kind, including compostable and biodegradable plastics
  • Ragwort
  • rubble
  • soil or compost

Reduce your garden waste by composting at home

You can compost most types of garden waste at home.

If you do not have a brown bin you can book a garden waste collection online

Leeds City Council proves a free collection service for Leeds residents who need medical or clinical waste collecting from their home.

  • bandages
  • plasters
  • wound dressings
  • swabs
  • renal bags
  • colostomy bags - empty
  • surgical gloves, aprons, shoe and hair covers
  • needles (housebound patients who live alone only) 
  • clinical body wash and cleaning agents

No thanks

  • needles, syringes and pens - return these to your doctor
  • incontinence pads - bag these and put it in your black bin
  • medical implements
  • excrement and bodily fluids
  • medication, tablets and creams - return these to your doctor or pharmacist
  • blood, human or animal waste
  • general household waste - bag this and put it in your black bin
