Health and Wellbeing

The Armed Forces Covenant states that no one who has served in the Armed Forces should face disadvantage and, in specific circumstances, can expect special consideration.

Op RESTORE

Op Restore: The Veterans Physical Health and Wellbeing Service is an NHS service that provides specialist care and treatment to veterans who have physical health problems as a result of their time in the Armed Forces. Op RESTORE works closely with health and support services to ensure that veterans and their families can access appropriate support service and receive personalised treatment what recognises the impact military service can have on your physical health.

Leeds City Council has been working with GP services within the city to make sure our veteran community can access the priority NHS care they are entitled to.

It is also important to stay active and connected to your local community.

Flexible leisure centre membership

As a member of the armed forces you can sign up for an Active Leeds corporate premier discount membership, which is flexible and you can cancel it any time.     

This gives you access to council leisure centre facilities in Leeds for £24.95 a month.

Gardening

Gardening is good for you and allotment gardening offers additional benefits that help reduce loneliness and enable veterans and members of the armed forces community to engage with other people.

Op COURAGE

Op COURAGE is the NHS service that provides specialist care for those Armed forces veterans suffering from a mental health crisis. Op COURAGE can help veterans and family members with a range of support and treatment through trained professionals who are from, or have experience of working with, the Armed Forces Community.

Linking Leeds

Linking Leeds is the integrated, city wide social prescribing service for the people of Leeds. Social Prescribing is a way of linking people with a range of local community services to improve their social, emotional and mental wellbeing. Wellbeing Coordinators are based within GP practices providing one-to-one support over the phone and face to face along side community outreach from GP surgeries and other community locations.

Live Well Leeds

Live Well Leeds is  a community based service providing support for people with mil to moderate support needs to manage and/or recover from their mental health, diagnose or not. Support offered includes leisure and social activities, group and one to one befriending services, peer support and volunteering opportunities.

Mindwell is the mental health website for people in Leeds. Mindwell can help you find support in the city and take care of your mental health wellbeing.

Mental health day opportunities 

Leeds City Councils offers mental health day opportunities to help adults who need support with their mental wellbeing.

This service supports people who want to:

  • increase their independence
  • connect with their local community

Royal British Legion

Royal British Legion branches provide a focal point for social activities, Remembrances and support the Armed Forces community in all kinds of way. In local communities they play a vital role in helping hard to reach individuals and tackling problems like loneliness and isolation.

Help for Heroes

Help for Heroes knows that the best thing to do in difficult times can be to get out of the house and meet like-minded people with a shared experience. This is why they run a range of sporting and social events across the UK for veterans and families, bringing people together where they live.

The Armed Forces and Veterans' Breakfast Clubs

The AFVBC facilitates veterans and serving armed forces personnel to meet face to face in a relaxed, safe, and social environment to enjoy breakfast and banter. Free to attend, free to join. There are no fees, subs or commitments: we don't exist to support any national charity, organisation or business: just turn up, pay for your breakfast and enjoy the company of other Armed Forces Veterans.
