There is a range of equipment available to help maintain your independence when eating and drinking. From making changes to your existing cutlery to adaptive eating and drinking aids there are a lot of options available to you.

Equipment can be privately purchased from a wide range of retailers both online and on the high street.  If you feel that you need further information or advice please call Adult Social Care on 0113 2224401 to make a referral.  Someone will call you back to discuss the difficulties you are having and if necessary, arrange for an assessment when equipment may be provided to you, from Leeds Equipment Service, free of charge.

Dishware

Adapted plates and bowls can help solve eating problems experienced by people with coordination and motor skill issues

Other types of adapted plates, dishes and bowls include:

  • sloped and scoop shapes
  • added suction cups
  • extra wide and shaped edges to help with grip

Plate Guard

A plate guard is a simple pliable piece of plastic that fits to the edge of a plate and stops food from tipping over the edge. They are very useful for people who have limited hand use and may have to eat with one hand.

Non slip mats

These non-slip material mats can be used to stabilise objects and provide greater grip on objects. For example, it can be put under a plate to stop it moving, or used to open jars and bottles. These mats are available pre-cut or in sheets which can then be cut to size.
