There is a range of equipment available to help maintain your independence and feel comfortable when in bed. From rails and risers to help you get in and out of bed to talking clocks and alarms there are a lot of options available to you.

Equipment can be privately purchased from a wide range of retailers both online and on the high street.  If you feel that you need further information or advice please call Adult Social Care on 0113 2224401 to make a referral.  Someone will call you back to discuss the difficulties you are having and if necessary, arrange for an assessment when equipment may be provided to you, from Leeds Equipment Service, free of charge.

Dressing aids

yellow plastic long handled shoe hornThere are lots of different daily living aids which can help you in the bedroom such as grab sticks to help you pick things up off the floor to dressing aids and sticks. Some other dressing aids which can help maintain independence include:

  • long handled shoe horns
  • dressing sticks
  • button and zipper hooks
  • specially designed clothing

Grab Sticks

Grab sticks, also known as reachers and pickup sticks, are designed to help those who struggle to bend down or stretch and are an easy to control solution for all rooms of the house. They come in a range of lengths and are perfect for picking up most things from the floor or reaching heights.

Sock/Stocking Aid

Sock aids help those who struggle bending and reaching down put standard socks and stockings using an easy pully system of long tapes.  

Things to consider

Users need to have good hand function to enable them to grip and use some living aids, such as grab sticks.
