Around the house

There is a range of equipment available to help maintain your independence when moving around the house. From mobility aids and fall detectors to grab rails and adaptations there are a lot of options available to you.

Equipment can be privately purchased from a wide range of retailers both online and on the high street.  If you feel that you need further information or advice please call Adult Social Care on 0113 2224401 to make a referral.  Someone will call you back to discuss the difficulties you are having and if necessary, arrange for an assessment when equipment may be provided to you, from Leeds Equipment Service, free of charge.

Adaptations

If you are struggling to access some areas of your home you may want to install aids to make it easier for you. Some examples of this can include:

  • grab rails
  • wider door frames
  • stair lift
  • through floor lift

It is worth noting that if you carry out any work that is specifically for someone who has a disability, then you may be eligible for VAT relief on the works.

Grab Rails

A grab rail provides a sturdy hand hold to help you move around your bathroom in a number of different scenarios, such as getting in and out of the bath and shower or on and off the toilet.

Home Plus (Leeds) is a service for anyone who could be at serious risk of falling who needs help with repairs that may cause hazards in their home, or need information and advice to maintain their independence. Home Plus (Leeds) can help by fitting a range of grab rails, including external grab rails.

Stair and through floor lifts

Stair and through floor lifts can be a good solution for making it safer to get up and down the stairs but they may not suit all homes or needs. It is important to access independent information and advice as part of a professional assessment to make sure they are the right solution for you and your home.

William Merritt Centre offers free, professional assessment and regular stairlift clinics, where you can access impartial advice on suppliers and relevant information to help you make a decision.
