There is a range of equipment available to help us feel confident in the kitchen. From kettle tippers and walkers with frames to help prevent hot spills to bread boards and knives to help avoid accidents with sharp knives there are a lot of options available to you.

Equipment can be privately purchased from a wide range of retailers both online and on the high street.  If you feel that you need further information or advice, please contact William Merritt Centre for impartial and professional advice and assessment, or call Adult Social Care on 0113 222 4401 to make a referral for assessment with the Leeds Equipment Service.

Perching stool

A perching stool is an adjustable stool with a sloping, padded seat that allows the user to 'semi-sit' and rest in areas like the kitchen or the bathroom. It may have a backrest, armrests, and slip-resistant rubber feet for additional comfort and support.

Benefits

Reduces the strain from standing for long periods. 

Helps you to get up and down from a full seating position.

Suitable for the elderly, disabled, or those who have recently undergone hip replacement or other surgery.

Things to consider

 There needs to be enough space in the room to use the stool and avoid a trip hazard.

Check to make sure that the person using the stool can still reach work surfaces. 

The user needs to have a good sitting balance.

It is important to follow the weight limits and that the stool is set to the correct height for the user.
