(EASY READ HINTS and TIPS)
If someone from a service is coming to your home, it’s important to keep safe.
Make sure the person shows you who they are before you let them in.
Have someone with you, like a friend, family member, or support worker.
Ask questions like
How much will I have to pay in total?
(Ask if this includes call-out fees, up-front costs, extra charges, and VAT.)
What if you don’t turn up, or you are late?
What if something breaks?
Do I need to sign anything?
If yes, how long does it last?
Can I stop the service if I want to change to someone else?
Will I have to pay to leave?
What can I do if I’m not happy?
Can I complain or get my money back?
Remember, you don’t have to say yes while the person is in your home. You can ask for time to think.
If someone tries to rush you or makes you feel pushed to decide, it’s okay to say no. Think carefully before using them.
Not everyone who knocks on your door or calls your phone is honest. Some people may try to trick you to get into your home. They might say they are selling something or offering help, but they are not.
If someone comes to your door to sell something, don’t feel rushed to buy.
Take time to talk to a friend, family member, or support worker first.
A good company will never try to make you decide straight away.
Be careful with phone calls and emails.
Some people might call or email you. They might say they are from your bank or a shop you used before. They may ask for your account details.
Do not trust them.
Even if they sound real, do not give them your password, PIN, or login details.
Real banks and shops will never ask for this.
If you think someone has tricked you, it’s important to speak up.
Tell a family member or a support worker what happened.
