Helplines and Support Workers – How can they help me and my family?
These services offer information and advice to people, families and friends. After a diagnosis of dementia, we want to know “what’s next ?”, and what’s available to help us to live with the condition.
These services are also useful at the earliest stages, when you’re worried about possible signs and symptoms. Or when a person isn’t ready to accept help but families are desperate to know what to do next.
You might need information about the different services available; or about money and benefits; or aids and equipment. You might just need someone to listen to you, and to feel less alone with the condition. These services can help with all those things, and more.
All these services accept referrals directly – anyone can make contact, and you don’t have to be referred by a professional. All are free of charge.
Memory Support Workers
Leeds has a team of Memory Support Workers, who work for the Alzheimers Society and are funded by the local NHS. You can contact them by phone or email for anything to do with dementia, or worries about dementia. NB. The Alzheimers Society supports people with any type of dementia; you don’t have to have Alzheimers Disease.
Carers Leeds
Carers Leeds supports unpaid carers – family, neighbours or friends – including carers of people living with dementia. Carers Leeds provide a helpline, 1:1 support, and groups for carers of people living with dementia. They have staff who understand the difficulties of caring as dementia progresses.
Admiral Nurse
Admiral Nurse services are available for some people in Leeds, including people eligible for British Legion help, through service with the armed forces. Admiral Nurses are specialist nursing roles, linked to the charity Dementia UK.
There are two national Helplines: The Alzheimers Society’s Dementia Support Line and the Dementia UK Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline. They are open longer hours than local services, and can put you in touch with support in Leeds.
