Extra Care housing is housing with support, designed for older people (aged 55 and over) who wish to live independently. On-site care staff can meet varying levels of care and support needs and provide all residents with 24/7 help in case of an emergency.
Residents have their own one or two-bedroom apartments which can be adapted to allow people to live safely in their home for longer, for example the facility to install a tracking hoist. The apartments are unfurnished and are built to be easy to access, for example eye level ovens and wide doorways or hallways. Properties are also designed to aid people who have limited sight, Dementia or memory problems.
Extra Care housing has shared spaces where people can meet and socialise which typically includes a café or restaurant, shared lounge and shared outside space. Meeting places may also be used for scheduled social activities or by other organisations for advice sessions or drop-in clinics.
